Previously living in Totnes, residents parking roads like Maudlin Road were dead during the day but completely full in evenings allow business permits for parking in residents area hours restricted to 10am-5pm so avoids cars being left for days or weeks I have several suggestions, more than I can write in 5 minutes one of them is to treat shopkeepers and their staff the same as residents; they pay higher rents and higher rates and yet they have no rights. Most of them used to park in residential areas after people have gone to work and left before they returned from work, this way maximising the use of parking space in the residential areas. Now they're forced to park in the central car parks or in places like Plymouth Road. It is obvious that a problem exists on Friday market days (the only time i have first hand experience) further large car park would be a solution but where? Permits to be available to persons who work in town all day (resident permits). They go work we park, we go home, they arrive back from work and park outside their own houses. More parking is the only answer! Car parks eg multi car park? Could an out of Totnes car park be provided for shop owners/traders to park in - with a bus to High st/Fore st. Many customers complaining that they have driven around Totnes unable to park in any car parks. They are constantly full. Many people have said they won't be back Totnes has some particularly voracious traffic wardens. who I believe sit and wait to penalise people whose vehicles have been overstayed by 2-3 minutes. They should be a bit more flexible in issuing tickets. This has put a lot of visitors OFF visiting Totnes Car park as was originally promised - pay on leaving car park would be better than pay on entry - then people don't run out of time and have to rush back to their cars. Business owners should be allowed a parking permit as residents. Empty spaces could be used by shoppers during the day if residents have gone to work. There is plenty of room for both employees and customers during the day in street parking as the streets during the day are virtually empty, this situation had worked for a long time. if you want TOTNES to die you are going the right way about it The residents parking scheme is ridiculous. I live in a zone B street and rarely have trouble parking - now i have to buy a permit. During the day the street is half empty and should be available as free parking for people who come to shop in TOTNES. it should be resident AFTER 5.30pm not until 5.30 - thereby ensuring people don't leave their car for a week or more when going on a rail journey for example. Be careful when tweaking Residents zonal use. Zone A has a lot of empty space (Smithfield, Collapark, etc.) whereas Zone B is pretty full. Free short term parking to visitors (example 2 hrs) in Zone A would be common-sense solution, whereas Zone B will revert back to its prior over-congested state. The new car parking scheme is ridiculous and should be scrapped. The council should be encouraging the local traders not driving them out. We now have on street residents parking but no cheap - cheaper parking for workers in Totnes. when asked by Totnes councillors what I thought - said the above was definitely a priority item but was totally ignored by everybody, thus resulting in the parking chaos elsewhere. put a multi-storey in so they stop using our car park. re- residents parking - why not have resident parking from 6-8am then leave it for employees for the day? Since the development/bulding around the back of the town there are fewer spaces. Additionally the introduction of a residents parking scheme has put extra pressure on the reduced car parking spaces and left huge areas close to the town empty during the day. People should know if they purchase a house and noit pay dues in the price for the lowering of the kerb, they should not be argumentative to people parking, thank you for reading my survey. Not to park in the car park to release the spaces for shoppers. Perception is people can't park so don't bother to come to town Customers put off by lack of parking life is already full of stress - the pay and display meters etc -- really do not help. i would seriously suggest the council moves to less palatial premises as a way of paying for this - and turn Follaton House into a housing scheme for those local people. It would be good to either have special or another car park for people to don't live in Totnes but work there! park and ride from SHDC offices? a radical change to Heath's nursery car park ie 2-tier buiilding. Our dropin and shop trade has been severely hit. What is the point of a customer parking his/her car at a cost of 20p if they wish to purchase a newspaper eg Totnes Times for 40p! let workers use the empty streets to park park and ride would be good for visitor which would free up space for workers in car parks as someone who is employed in Totnes I find it very frustrating that the places I have always parked have been converted into residents only areas and when I am driving around looking for a place to park these spaces are generally mostly empty during the daytime. It seems a waste! Also why can a business owner not get a residents parking permit equivalent? Meters have pushed parking out to residential streets Not that the council cares, but sick of pedal cycles ridden in wrong direction on road and in any direction on footpaths. If I am injured due to the above I will sue to rider and council!! It is time Totnes had a park and ride scheme- what about the Dairy Crest site for this and converting an existing car park? I have personally left Totnes when I came into shop because I could not find a parking space. I have done this on a number of occasions Totnes needs more/ better parking - an undergound new car park would be ideal - but also a park and ride scheme for people from outside town Still getting complaints from visitors about how poor car parking is in Totnes. This issue has badly affected accommodation, businesses too. several visitors have requested a park and ride system like Dartmouth - that's a first and shows how frustrating they find the situation. It seems SHDC likes to penalise its residents high parking charges - charging residents to park on previously free streets - re Sundays - why not let local people park freely in places like Longmarsh, so can enjoy simple walks freely - in many european countries you can park freely by beaches etc. There is not enough, too expensive Start undoing the damage already done by town parking meters and residents parking scheme. face reality. until there is a real alternative to car travel it is here to stay - or put up with a bankrupt town. This scheme was not properly researched and implemented in a hurry. It couldn't have been at a worse time and shows how the County Council are totally out of touch with the business community, many of whom are also residents. Where there is residents only parking the streets are mostly empty during the day because they have driven elesewhere. This is a town and so the scheme is not practical. The residential parking permits are a problem so it needs readdressing - taken away?! I feel it is definitely having a negative effect on business and convenience for residents and those visiting. It's just not working! Make Midas provide the multi storey car park as promised. Provide more car park spaces with concessions for workers. Make SHDC workers pay to park at Follaton House. The residents parking areas now seem to be empty during the day so these places could be used for workers during the day!!!! Also, a park and ride car park should be set up ie KEVICC during the summer and Follaton House at weekends, or a field further out of town!!!! If I come into town on my day off and can't park I drive through!!!! as I am sure a lot of other people do!!! As I see it the main issue is traders clogging up the car parks - why not issue permits in residential areas for each business/shop - like the residents - two permit per business/shop for trading hours only 9am-5pm As a resident my biggest issue with parking was the commuters who go off and leave their cars for anything up to 2/3 weeks at aa time., As a lcoal resident and a business I have 2 hats, although it's great being able to park when and where you want near my home. As a trader I fully support whatever solution that can be found. Thank you. I find that the residents parking scheme introduced in May 2010 makes it really difficult to park in town now. If you work in town it means either paying for the whole day at a car park or walking 20 minutes from outside the parking zone. It can't be attractive to tourists coming to town either. Need more car parks in general. Customers complain about lack of long term / town centre parking. Lack of signposts showing where parking is. SHDC and Devon CC between them have created a parking crisis in this town and there appears to have been no motivation other than to make money. They need to listen to locals, listen to experts (surveys and reports have been ignored) and do what is best for the town. (2) can anyone tell us what happened to the mutli-storey promised as part of the South Gate development? (3) visitors to the town are down = loss of footfall = loss of business evidence: I have spoken to people trawling the car parks (old market is directly opposite us) on Fridays who have said they won't bother to come to Totnes market again. Residents street parking permit zones on MAIN roads counter-productive. Not fully subscribed to. Pushing parking into other residential roads. Perhaps related or not but the main High Street feels particularly dangerous to walk down with a pram, especially near the top of town. NO CARS UP THE HIGH STREET Customers do complain about the lack of parking spaces on busy days such as Friday and Saturday. In the past I have myself (as a visitor) turned back and left the town after failing to find an empty space at the car parks on a Friday. In the week, in the daytime, residents go off to work. Side streets remain half empty when they could be used by visitors to Totnes. Surely we want to ENCOURAGE people to come to the shops etc and not discourage them We need a park and Ride I don't own a car and have nothing to do with this area of concern With residents parking why not implement it from 6 in the evening until 7 in the morning to make sure problem vehicles move but the spaces are still accessible during the working day for staff and customers If a suitable place could be found, a park and ride would be beneficial, and keep a lot of the traffic out of town all the residential zoining has done is to force the commuters further away. If you are going to keep the zoning give commuters the option to buy a permit. The residential zones are practically deserted now during the day Totnes needs a multi storey car park. This should have been built before new housing. I feel parking on the local streets should be reintroduced, perhaps allowing limited parking for shoppers (up to 3 hrs) I also feel local residents should be allowed to apply for permanent permits. This needs to be implemented quickly to prevent the downward erosion of trade. On a personal level our monthly turnover has decreased since April 2010. Why not a underground multi-storey in Heaths Way (?) (The large one behind Civic Square) - by going underground it would not be an eyesore and MANY more people would be able to park in town. Also Park and Ride at Dairy Crest site PLEASE!! I have owned my business for 20 years and have always found parking spaces around town. Since residents parking scheme I have been forced to park in Follaton or Copland Meadow and consequently get soaked and also cannot shop locally as it's too far to carry shopping. Now I read we might be able to park for 2-4 hours in residents spaces. this will not help any of us who work from 9.30-5. Why can't residents scheme apply from 6pm-9am as in London and other towns. The system is unworkable and killing Totnes businesses. Lately I have driven into my shop to drop off stock then spent a while looking for a parking space on the far outskirts of town (the nearer streets residents parking area - being empty) I have been unable to find anywhere and have driven home and come back in on the bus - this is so frustrating - I am becoming very disillusioned. I am a graduate single mother, working part time for minimum wage. I cannot afford to work for one hour a day for nothing, simply to pay for being here. I am partially disabled not to the extent that I can have or even want a blue badge. It is very difficult to walk the distance from which I now have to park the car with any bag, umbrella etc. By the time I get to work I am damp and cold and there is no heating, plus I need to look presentable, not like a drowned rat by the time I get here to work. There are more and more people not bothering to come to Totnes any more. I know this as I sometimes work in Plymouth, all one has to do is sit in a shop - gallery and talk to people. Many customers say they will think twice before returning as they don't want to spend ages driving all around the car parks to find a space. My trade has ground to a halt and there is hours with no footfall when I would expect regular trade before the introduction. I fear we have already done too much damage. Holiday makers were very disappointed and say Totnes overall is becoming less attractive they don't want to see M&Co or franchise stores. I have lived here all my life and am proud what Totnes has always stood for, a unique vibrant town with a vision for being alternative and an example to other towns. How to create a friendly warm interesting to visit and to keep returning to. With the loss of Dartington College we should embrace what we still have and provide Park & ride for free or small fee. We could also provide local businesses and employees with daytime permits to park in the residency areas during the daytime when many are out of their residential places themselves out working. I think the whole idea should be scrapped. I live in one area and if my parking place is full (no permit area) I now can't park ANYWHERE - I can't even apply for a permit. I also can't visit my sister or friends in the other zones as they are reluctant to hand out the few permits for visitors, this is stupid, we should be free in this area to visit elderly people, sick, friends, lovers etc. for any reason, without incurring a chargel. I am so angry and upset by what people are doing to our town. I have never felt so strongly about a change here as this. back |
